Garner Construction

About Us

Brothers and business partners, Dan and Jim Garner moved to Washington at an early age. Dan and Jim After completing their education here they decided to become carpenters, entering the unions Apprenticeship training.

Jim earned his Journeyman's Certificate in 1972, Dan in 1973. They put their training to use immediately, working with several major contractors. Including Gilbert H. Moen Co., specializing in commercial and industrial jobs; Frank Fitter Construction, a builder of high end custom homes; and Frenzel Construction.

For Frenzel, the brothers worked on cold storage facilities, medical buildings, Red Robin restaurants, controlled atmosphere warehouses, office complexes, movie theatres, schools and a country club. On the last four of these projects Danny was the Foreman; gaining not only building but management experience.

At this point in their careers, the brothers had gained experience in all types of construction from large warehouses to luxury homes and all phases of carpentry from basic framing to fine detail cabinet work. In addition, James had developed business skills and experience while operating his own company.

With their combined experiences and their strong desire for a carpentry business of their own, and the full support of their families, the Garners began Garner Construction in April 1983.

Their first job as partners was for Gross Alaska where they remodeled a chain of movie theatres up the inland passage. The final phase was to build a new multi-screen theatre in Juneau.

From there they came back to Washington where in 1984 they began to specialize in commercial buildings and custom homes; completing many large commercial, industrial and institutional projects along with many homes for individual families in the area.

Robert Garner

In 1993 their son Robert Garner joined them in the company right out of school. He worked for four years as an apprentice, when in 1997 he became a journeyman carpenter. This enabled the brothers to greatly expand the work they were doing and change the focus of their company to Commercial and Multi-family including apartments, assisted living and nursing home facilities. Robert was soon an indispensable part of the company.

In 1995 they changed the name of the company to Yakima Garner Construction, LLC and began to expand their work to other states. They now have General Contractor licenses in Washington, Oregon, and California.

They have continued to expand their business by giving their customers the personal touch. They are willing to be involved in all phases, from the design of the building, which can include value engineering the plans so the customer gets the most for their money but is able to stay within their budget, to working with the different city governments to acquire the permits. One, if not both of the brothers is personally on the site every day to make sure the work is done correctly and the job comes in on time and on budget. Customer care, the right pricing, and quality work have resulted in many years of working with the same customers again and again.

Yakima Garner Construction has a twenty year history as a member of the National Home Builders Association, supporting not only local but national policies that improve the building industry. James Garner served on the local board for two years. Our company actively participates in community service whenever there is an opportunity, with company representatives serving in a diverse group of organizations that make our community and state a better place to live.
